Get To Know Your Competition


What is the most effective and telling way to track how successful your social media marketing strategy is? By constantly reviewing your analytics across the different platforms that you use and comparing them to past data.

But that isn’t the only way that you can see how you are performing on social media.

Another way to tell if your social media marketing strategy is helping you reach the goals you have set in place is to compare yourself to your competition. When you can see what content and images are working for them, you can use that information to either transform your current strategy or affirm that what you are doing is already working.

How can you monitor your competition? Here are a few methods:

#1. What Is Being Shared?

If your competition has a high number of post shares on social media, chances are they have already discovered what types of content and images appeal to their target audience. Looking over their day-to-day posts can give you an idea of what content is popular with their followers, but there can be a lot of daily posts to look at that extend far back into the past.

Instead, you can view their most popular shared content via programs that find their top-rated posts. For example, there is a program called Ahrefs Content Explorer* that will share that information, along with other useful data, like what platforms the post was most popular on.

*Note: In order to use this program, you must do a trial or pay for continual use.

#2. Who Is Doing The Sharing?

Discovering what users are engaged with your competition helps you to see the types of people that you should be reaching out to. If they like their posts so much to share it within their own feeds, chances are that they will be more likely to share your content as well.

You can see who these users are by searching for them on the Twitter homepage and selecting the “Live” feature. But what should you do with the information once you have it?

You should:

  • select to follow their handles
  • reply to one of their personal tweets
  • retweet or like one of their tweets

If they see you engaged with their page, there is a good chance that they will return the favor.

Not only can you do this to increase the number of users that follow your brand – that are very likely to make a purchase from you – but you can see what influencers are engaging with your competition.

With the influencers, you should:

  • follow them on their most active social media platform
  • connect with them and give them some background information about why they would care about your brand
  • build a relationship and discuss promoting one another’s services/products

#3. How Often Are They Posting?

If you can view what days and what times throughout the day that your competition’s users are most engaged, you can manipulate your schedule a little to make sure that you are reaching these valuable followers. Not only can you see when they receive the most engagement, but you can see at what times they are most likely to interact.
